Thank You's

What a beautiful thing for the senior generation to pour into the younger generation! That is exactly what was experienced during Sewing for Kids last week! Many thanks to Aline Brigman, Betty Fulenchek, Ruth Ann Jones, Doris Hailey, Charla Hinson, Nancy Strobel, Jo Alexander, Judith Nevil, Kim Helm, Cynthia Thomas for sharing skills and building relationships with young women who are eager to learn! You have blessed this church family!

Thank you all so much for your prayers, phone calls, text messages, and for those who helped drive me to visit Becky. Your kindness, encouragement, and support have meant more to me than words can express during this time. I am truly grateful to be part of such a loving and caring church family. Thank you for keeping Becky and me in your prayers. May God bless each of you for your thoughtfulness and generosity. With sincere appreciation, Wayne McLain

TODD’S TAKE

What a joy it is to have you with us this morning. We are so glad you chose to spend part of your day here - worshiping together, sharing communion, and opening God's Word.

Today we return to our sermon series The Crown Divided — the story of the northern kingdom of Israel and its nineteen kings. When we last left the palace we were standing in the shadow of Ahab. Then we took a week away from the kings to walk with the prophet Elijah.

This morning we're back. And we have some ground to cover.

Between Ahab and where we land today there are several kings — and they all get the same rating. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. He walked in the ways of Jeroboam. Different names, same verdict, over and over again.

But there is one king  in this era that stops you cold. A father looks at his newborn son and gives him a name. Not just any name — the name spoken in condemnation over every king the northern kingdom had ever produced.

He named him Jeroboam.

Nobody flinched. And that may be the most frightening moment in two hundred years of Israel's decline. Not the golden calves. Not the assassinations. The most frightening moment is the quiet morning when a culture had drifted so far, so gradually, that the wrong thing had simply stopped feeling wrong.

This morning we look at Jeroboam II — forty one years of prosperity so well documented that archaeologists have held the evidence in their hands. We will hear from a fig farmer named Amos who walked into that prosperity and saw something the palace couldn't see. And we will look at Jehu — the most zealous king the northern kingdom ever produced — who still got the same verdict as everyone else.

Today we will be reminded that zeal and prosperity are not the metrics that measure a life of faith. God wants more - our very hearts.
