This morning we will jump into Paul's letters beginning with Romans. Romans is often considered Paul's greatest contribution to Christian thought. It is filled with verses many of you are familiar with and have been inspired by. Among the top verses from Romans are:
Romans 3:23 — For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Romans 5:6 — You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
Romans 6:1–2 — What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means!
Romans 6:23 — For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:1 — Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:18 — I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
Romans 8:26 — In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.
Romans 8:31 — If God is for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:37 — We are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Romans 12:1 — Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Romans 12:21 — Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
These verses are a veritable “greatest hits of Paul.”
It’s impossible to hit on all the powerful themes found in Romans in one sermon, so today I will focus on one that shone through to me in this reading.
So glad you have chosen to be with us today. May God speak to us today through song, communion, prayer, and the word.
