TODD’S TAKE
Good morning and welcome to our worship service. If you are a guest with us this morning we welcome you and invite you to join in with us as we honor our Creator and Savior.
This morning in the sermon time I will continue a series of lessons on King David. Last week we saw David at his best keeping a promise he made to Saul’s son and his best friend Jonathan to honor the family of the fallen king. He seeks out Jonathan's son Mephibosheth and blesses him with a residence in the king's palace and a perpetual seat at the king’s table. David reminds us of the importance of keeping promises, and David’s love for the exiled and lame Mephibosheth reminds us of God’s lavish grace poured out on all of us.
Today’s story from 2 Samuel 11 takes a tragic turn. David, in his selfishness, abuses his power in taking Bathsheba and then carries out a devious plot that eventually ends in the death/murder of Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah. Today’s episode of The Crown is David at his absolute worst. How does this happen to the man after God’s own heart and what we can learn to keep sin from taking root in our heart and wreaking havoc in our lives?
Church at the Park
The weather cleared just in time for a beautiful night at Munson Park for our Church at the Park. Thanks to the Elders for cooking us burgers and hotdogs. This kicks off our Summer Wednesday programming. Next week we will have PAWS at 5:15 and a combined adult class in the atrium. Classes will be offered for our children as well. For the first three weeks of the summer the adults will be looking at the background of some the hymns we sing in a series called Hymn Stories. So many of our songs were written out of personal struggles and victories by real people like you and me who are working through the ups and downs of life. Make plans to join us.
Church Health Assessment
Thanks to everyone who took the Church Health Assessment. We ended up with 198 surveys completed. This data combined with data from our focus groups and staff/elders interviews will help us see more clearly the strengths and weakness of Park Avenue and help us vision for the future. I really like a term the Siburt Institute has introduced to us as we go through this process. We want to discover God’s Preferred Future for the church. As always, continue to pray that PACOC can see clearly and seek boldly God’s vision for us.
