TODD'S TAKE
Good morning. What a blessing it is to worship together as the body of Christ! Welcome to all our church family and to our guests.

Do you ever have those times when you have to change plans out of necessity? You’ve become accustomed to doing things a certain way and have been happy with the results, but now circumstances demand a change.

That’s how I felt with Church on the Lake. For over 20 years the plan has been on the first Wednesday of June for the church to gather at picturesque Waterloo Lake Park, cook some burgers, and enjoy the company of brothers and sisters in Christ. Aside from the few years where weather disrupted our plans, all had been going so well. We had no plans of fixing something that wasn’t broke.

So, this year when we heard that construction at Waterloo Lake made the venue unavailable we began to scramble for a new location. Honestly, I was a little perturbed that our tradition was at stake. I like tradition. I like doing things the same way year in and year out. I don’t like change, but this time I was forced.

We settled on Munson Park, north of downtown. It was a location that I was only vaguely familiar with, and I suspected most of the church was unfamiliar with as well. I worried it wouldn't work. I worried the Munson Park would be confused with Munson Stadium. I worried that the lack of scenic views of Waterloo Lake would ruin it all. “Church at the Park” didn’t have the ring to it like “Church on the Lake.” I braced myself for an epic fail. Change had ruined the tradition.

Well, was I wrong! “Church at the Park” was spectacular. We had an amazing crowd. The park proved to offer even more than the lake. We all came into the office the next day raving about the event.

Do you ever have those times when you have to change plans out of necessity? Maybe I need more of those. Maybe I need to be more receptive to change and less suspicious. Maybe there are experiences and joys and successes out there that my devotion to tradition is keeping me from. Change is scary but even more scary is imagining what I might be missing out on.

This Week on The Crown
1 Samuel 16

After Saul is rejected as king Samuel is sent on another king-seeking mission. This time to the town of Bethlehem and the house of Jesse. Jesse has plenty of candidates as he parades seven of his sons before the prophet, but none of them are the one chosen by God. Samuel asks if Jesse has any more sons and, sure enough, he does. The youngest, David, is out tending to the sheep. Jesse calls him in from the fields and Samuel immediately identifies him as the successor to the throne. It’s the least obvious and least impressive that God has called. God sees in David what others cannot, for he looks not at outward appearance but at the heart.
