TODD'S TAKE
Good morning and welcome to our worship. It is good to have everyone with us in person today and we are glad to have those of you who are joining us online.
I found it most interesting that after preaching on Providence last Sunday we would witness the invasion of one country of another. One aspect of Providence we explored was that God is in control of the nations. Among the passages I cited were Job 12:23, “He makes nations great, and destroys them; he enlarges nations, and disperses them”; and Daniel 2:21, “He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others.”
Throughout the Old Testament we see nations rise and fall seemingly regardless of their moral character. Witnesses to these events stand confused and even on occasion question God for standing back while evil prospers. The prophet Habakkuk opens his prophecy including this charge against God—”Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict abounds.” (Habakkuk 1:3)
On social media I have heard similar expressions of confusion and disgust even as I feel these same sentiments watching the events of this week unfold.
Like Habakkuk we are confused and perhaps even angry that this world works like this especially as we hold to the belief in a sovereign, loving, and good God. Habakkuk’s conversation with God is, to say the least, an interesting dialogue and one I would turn you to in times like these. If nothing else we all need to be reminded of the prophet’s conclusion—”Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior.” (Habakkuk 3:17–18).
Confused? Yes. Angry? I would think so. But through the confusion and anger the prophet finds room for praise and, in doing so, calls all the faithful to join him.
