The Discipline of Contemplating God's Greatness
Sermon Summary

Over the next few weeks, we're contemplating God's greatness together—a vital spiritual discipline often neglected in our busy lives. When we focus only on our small corner of existence, we lose sight of God's awesomeness and become vulnerable to despair. Intentionally pondering the Being who exists far beyond our universe brings hope, confidence, and courage.
Beginning with Genesis 1:1, we discover three profound truths about God.
First, God is eternal. "In the beginning" tells us there was a starting point to creation, but God already existed. Modern science confirms the universe had a beginning and cannot be eternal—the second law of thermodynamics shows everything is winding down, not everlasting. But God stands outside time. Scripture declares: "From everlasting to everlasting you are God" (Psalm 90:2). Unlike everything in our universe that decays and declines, God remains forever in His prime—just as strong today as when He spoke creation into existence.
Second, God creates from nothing. The Hebrew word used in Genesis 1:1 describes bringing something into existence from absolutely nothing—ex nihilo. Humans can only shape existing materials; we need wood, tools, resources. God needs nothing. He speaks, and galaxies appear. This matters for your life: if God can create something from nothing in the cosmos, He can create something from the emptiness you're experiencing right now.
Third, God created everything—the heavens and earth. From subatomic particles to distant galaxies, all came into being through God's spoken word. No struggle, no effort—just "God said" and reality responded.
This is our God: eternal, creating from nothing, speaking universes into existence. And remarkably, this magnificent Creator cares personally about you and calls you to be His own.
How great is our God.
