TODD’S TAKE

Welcome to our worship service! We’re glad to have you here, whether you’re a longtime member or a first-time visitor. If you have any questions about Park Avenue or would like to know more about the Lord, please seek us out.

This morning, about two dozen of our families are at Lake Texoma for our Fortify Family Retreat. This is one way we are trying to encourage and equip our families to live out their faith in the context of their homes, while also creating a community where families walk alongside one another in that pursuit. As we worship together here, they are worshiping together there. Please keep them in your prayers today, and let’s continue to be a church that supports our families.

Today we continue our November series, At the Table, as we spend this month of Thanksgiving looking at the Lord’s Supper. Last Sunday we gathered in the Ark for a meal, and something more than eating happened. We were together. We remembered our history, celebrated what God is doing among us now, and looked ahead with hope to our future. Past, present, and future, all around a table.

That meal got me thinking: what if eating could be a spiritual discipline? When we hear the words “spiritual disciplines,” we usually think of prayer, Bible study, and fasting, and we often hear them as a call to do more. Pray more. Read more. Add one more thing to an already full calendar. But Paul wrote, “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). What if every meal could become a small act of worship?

This morning’s message, “Devoted to the Breaking of Bread,” looks at the early church in Acts 2, where believers “devoted themselves” to the breaking of bread and ate together “with glad and sincere hearts.” We’ll also look at the church in Corinth, which never skipped the Lord’s Supper but didn’t do it well. Paul’s answer wasn’t to do it more. It was to do it better.

That’s the heart of this whole series. We don’t need to add anything to our busy lives. We need to receive what God already gives us with fresh eyes. When you picked up your communion cup this morning, did you grab it like a bulletin, or receive it like a gift? Every meal we eat can remind us of God’s provision, and every time we come to the Lord’s table, we celebrate the greatest provision of all: his Son.

Our families at the lake will share a lot of meals this weekend. I pray those tables are full of laughter, conversation, and gratitude. I pray the same for ours.

So glad to be with you this morning as we celebrate the good news of God’s grace!
