TODD’S TAKE

Welcome to Park Avenue Church of Christ! Whether you have been worshiping with us for decades or this is your very first Sunday, we are glad you are here and we hope you leave today encouraged.

This Sunday we pause to honor the mothers in our lives — women who have given so much of themselves in love, sacrifice, and faithfulness. Whether you are a mother, a grandmother, or someone who has served as a mothering presence in the life of another, we are grateful for you. The world is a better place because of what you do.

We also recognize that Mother's Day is not the same experience for everyone. For some, this day carries grief — the loss of a mother, the longing for a child, or a relationship that has been painful. If that is your experience, please know that you are seen and that this community cares for you deeply.

This Sunday, our sermon will take a slightly different approach to Mother's Day. Rather than focusing only on the mothers in our lives, we will explore a biblical idea that may be new to some of you — the Church as Mother.

The language comes straight from Scripture. In Galatians 4, the Apostle Paul describes the true church as our mother — a community that gives birth to new life, nourishes those in her care, and forms people into maturity. This idea was so central to the early church that the North African bishop Cyprian gave it a name that echoed for centuries: Mater Ecclesia — Mother Church.

We will walk through three things a good mother does and ask honestly whether we, as Park Avenue, are doing them. It is a message about who we are called to be — not just for ourselves, but for every person who walks through our doors looking for life, nourishment, and a place to belong.
