TODD’S TAKE
Good morning and welcome to our worship services this morning.
There are only two more Sundays in 2024 and as we look forward to 2025 we are challenging every PACOC member to read through the Bible in 2025. Now, you can do that on your own but to maximize this experience, we are encouraging all members to join a Wednesday evening Disciple Making Community (DMC) consisting of no more than 12 people who will go on this journey together. These DMC's will meet from 6:30-7:30 PM throughout our two buildings and process each week's reading together led by a DMC leader. In addition to Wednesday night options, we are providing a Women's Only Online group on Thursday Evening, a Wednesday Morning Online Group, and a Tuesday Night Group Men’s group at the Barnabas Center. More information will be coming soon but you can go to pacoc.net/2025 to learn more or talk to me and I’ll be glad to fill you in.
In our sermon time I will continue looking at the origins and meanings of some of our most beloved Christmas carols in our current sermon series called Christmas Playlist. Today we will take a look at the classic Away in a Manger.
This carol dates back to the late 19th century meaning it has been sung for more than 125 years. It certainly ranks as one of our most favorite carols as it focuses on the humble beginnings of the Lord Jesus. Everything about his birth points to Jesus’ humility—his parents, Mary and Joseph, were not people of means and his birthplace, a lowly cave, was simple to say the least. While Paul does not talk about the particulars of Jesus’ birth he does point out the fact that Jesus indeed did humble himself as he became a human. In Philippians 2:6–7 he writes these sobering words about Jesus’ coming:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
