TODD’S TAKE
Good morning and welcome to our worship services this morning.
During the month of December in the sermon time I will be looking at some of our classic Christmas carols and talking about the history and meaning of these beloved hymns.
Singing has a long history in the Jewish and Christian tradition as a means of praise to God and as a method to teach the stories of the Bible and the core beliefs of our faith.
Moses and Miriam break out in song after the crossing of the Red Sea and the subsequent destruction of the Egyptian armies. The Judge Deborah leads a victory song after the defeat of Canaanite opponents. All the Psalms were meant not only to be read but to be sung. The book of Lamentations is a collection of dirges mourning the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC to the Babylonians. Jesus and the apostles sing in the upper room after the last supper. Paul and Silas are found singing in prison shortly before God breaks them out. And in the book of Revelation, the final book of the Bible, John pulls back the curtain of heaven to reveal a chorus of faithful witnesses singing their new version of the Song of Moses in celebration of God’s victory over the Beast.
So many of the events in Scripture have been put to song, but perhaps the event that has inspired more songs than any other is the birth of Jesus. I’ve read that there are nearly 10,000 songs celebrating the birth of Jesus! And it is these songs that we hear year after year that add so much to this wonderful celebration of God becoming man.
In this sermon series, Christmas Playlist, I hope we can gain a deeper appreciation of the meaning of these songs and the significance of the event they celebrate! Today we will look at the classic carol The First Noel.
So glad to have you here with us this morning as we honor the Father, give thanks for the Son, and are blessed by the fellowship of the Holy Spirit!
