TODD’S TAKE
Good morning and welcome to our worship service. If you are a guest with us this morning we welcome you and invite you to join in with us as we honor our creator and savior.
This morning I will continue our pursuit of peace as we read and think through chapters 14-16 of John—often referred to as the Upper Room Discourse. Jesus has revealed his impending death and knows this news is upsetting to the apostles, so he takes them aside to reassure them that in spite of this they can have peace. At the conclusion of this discourse he says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.” What we want to discover is what are “these things” that he has told them. Today we will start at the beginning of this speech and look at the opening verses of John 14 and uncover the first of “these things.”
Let me put in a good word for our upcoming Marriage Getaway. If you’re on the fence on deciding to go maybe these things will help make your decision. First off, the location is beautiful. The Chickasaw Retreat & Conference Center is a beautiful facility in an even more beautiful setting. Second, our presenters are top notch. Drs. Randy and Kerrianne Roper have been in ministry for years and exemplify a godly marriage and family. Randy was actually the youth minister here at Park Avenue when I came on the scene way back when. We only overlapped a short time but have kept up with each other through the years. Randy left PACOC to be the youth minister for the Edmond (OK) Church of Christ and is now the preaching minister there. Randy’s claim to fame (outside of ministry) is that he won a contest to attend the 2009 NBA draft as a guest of the Oklahoma City Thunder. You may want to ask him about how he won. Kerrianne is a professor at Oklahoma Christian University. Kerrianne is related to our own Stan Thomas and Ron Thomas. The Ropers have one son and a daughter-in-law. They have experienced much joy and sorrow in their marriage journey, and feel called to offer help and share hope with other couples. You will be blessed by them.
John 14:27 (NIV)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
